Enoch is a man that seems mysterious to us at times. That is mainly because there are only four or five mentioned accounts of him in the Bible and those accounts are very short.
Enoch was the son of Jared and a great grandfather of Noah. He was also the father of Methuselah. He was 65 years old when his son, Methuselah was born. He walked with God after Methuselah was born for 300 years. During that time he had other sons and daughters. He was 365 years old when he died (Genesis 4:17; Genesis 5: 18- 24):
5:18. And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch
5:19 And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters
5:20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.
5:21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah
5:22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters
5:23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years
5:24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.
As previously stated, there is very little written in the Bible concerning Enoch. However, what was written of him says much.
We find in two passages of scripture that Enoch pleased God:
-
“And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. Genesis 5:24
-
“By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.” Hebrews 11:5
We find one passage in the Bible claiming that he was a prophet and prophesied that the Lord would come in judgment and convict the ungodly:
3. “About these also Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, "Behold, the Lord came with ten thousands of his holy ones, to execute judgment on all, and to convict all the ungodly of all theirworks of ungodliness which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the hard things which ungodly sinners have spoken against him." Jude 1:14-15.
We see in the New Testament that he was an ancestor of Jesus
4. “Lamech was the son of Methuselah. Methuselah was the son of Enoch. Enoch was the son of Jared. Jared was the son of Mahalalel. Mahalalel was the son of Kenan.” Luke 3:37
Let’s take a look at those three topics:
ENOCH PLEASED GOD
Hebrews 11:6 says that "Without faith, it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He is God, and a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. The preceding verse (5) says that Enoch did not experience death because he was mentioned as one who pleased God twice; once in the Old Testament and once in the New Testament. Enoch was a man of much faith. He believed in God and must have known Him in a personal and way. He had to have fellowshipped with God and lived a life that was faithful and obedient. He was a man who worshipped God, offered sacrifices unto Him, and praised Him. He spent time with God.
ENOCH WAS A PROPHET
The book of Jude acclaims Enoch as one who prophesized that the Lord would come with ten thousands of His holy ones to execute judgment and convict the ungodly. It seems that Enoch proclaimed the goodness of God, called on men and women to resign their sins and turn to God, and extoled the goodness of God to mankind. He worshiped God and was translated (taken to be with God) so that he did not experience death
ENOCH WAS AN ANCESTOR OF JESUS CHRIST
We can see in the book of Luke (3:37) that Enoch is in the lineage of Jesus Christ and was one of his ancestors.
WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM THE LIFE OF ENOCH?
-
We can walk with God on a daily basis and look forward to being with Him someday,
-
Faith is very important to God; without it we will not please God.
-
Evangelism is important; we must proclaim the gospel to sinners and warn them of judgment.
