Adonai means “Master'' or "Lord" when referring to God. It speaks of a relationship -our relationship to God.  The name Adonai challenges us to live a life that is in obedience to the call and will of God.

Adonai means “Master" or Sovereign ruler or Lord. We are not our own, we belong to God. The name Adonai refers to God’s ownership of man.  He gives a plan and a purpose for each of us and gives us the ability to accomplish those purposes.  It is up to us to conform to His plan or will.  

Isaiah 6:8: Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me…. 11 Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate, 

Adonai means LORD and was often used as a substitute for God’s name "Yahweh" or "Jehovah" (these are interchangeable) in the Old Testament.
